What is Raku?

Raku is a ceramic technique that was founded by Raku Chojiro during 16th century Japan. Raku, loosley translates to enjoyment and pleasure.
The Ceramic piece is first bisque fired, which is a basic firing process. Then the piece is glazed and fired a second time in a smaller kiln which is heated up rapidly. When the glaze becomes shiny and fluid the piece is removed and placed into dried organic matter.
The matter begins to burn and more is placed on the piece then the piece is covered. After several minutes the piece can be removed and cleaned off.
Due to the great thermal shock cracks are common place. The Potters Dictionary of Materials and Techniques states that Raku is a state of mind rather than a ceramic technique. The Zen philosophy of self discovery through contemplation, of allowing accidents to happen is respected.
